When you take time off from exercising for whatever reason, it’s easy to say to yourself that you’ll get to it later. But the reality is that there’s no better time than now to get going. And although it isn’t easy to get back into it, the benefits are more than worth it. Here are some things you should know before you get started. The first thing you need to know is that you should take it slow. Don’t think that because you’ve exercised in the past that you can just pick up where you left off. Unfortunately, as soon as we quit exercising, our bodies lose tone and muscle. It takes a little time to build that back up. Going slowly helps prevent injury and allows you to stay excited about exercising. So take it easy at first! You really just want to get yourself going.
Another piece of advice? Try to work out every day. Doing something every day for 10 minutes is actually better than working out all at once for one or two days in the week. It helps your body stay conditioned, and it also keeps your mind focused on doing something every single day. It really does help keep the exercise momentum going. If you miss a day, don’t worry – just start again tomorrow. Just try and keep it consistent; that will help feed the exercise habit.
Lastly, don’t get stuck in the same old exercise rut. If you don’t love running, then don’t do it anymore. Try bike riding, or check out the pilates machines at the gym. It never hurts to try something new. You might just find something you absolutely love. And changing things up alleviates boredom.
